If you’ve ever managed customer relationships, you know how tedious manual data entry and constant updates can be – time-consuming and prone to errors. Luckily, today’s hero – Christopher O’Donnell, an ex-HubSpot Chief Product Officer, created a solution: Day.ai. This advanced AI tool automates tasks by collecting and organizing information from conversations, emails, and online profiles.

In this article, we explore Christopher’s life path and how his deep understanding of the challenges in managing customer data led him to create Day.ai.

Christopher’s early life

Christopher O’Donnell was born in 1981, and his journey into the world of technology began at a time when home computers were just starting to make their way into households. As a child, he received hand-me-down Apple IIgs from his cousins, but there was a catch — it came without any software. Undeterred, young Christopher saw this as an opportunity rather than a setback. He spent countless hours at the command line prompt, teaching himself to code through sheer trial and error.

Growing up as part of the Nintendo generation, Christopher was also fascinated by early gaming consoles. When his peers were engrossed in Mario Brothers (ah, those sweet times), he was not just playing the games but also pondering the technology behind them. By the age of 10, he was creating simple games, combining his love for entertainment and his burgeoning coding skills.

Discovering his passion

His passion for technology didn’t wane as he progressed through school. In high school and college, he eagerly enrolled in computer science classes, where he honed his skills further.

Yet, it wasn’t until his mid-20s that Christopher connected the dots and realized he could actually turn his lifelong passion into a profession. Christopher really found software engineering fun and creative. By the time, he discovered the roles of software engineers, product managers, and designers, and was immediately hooked by the idea of building something that people could use and enjoy.

Later, Christopher O’Donnell graduated from Brown University with a Bachelor’s degree in Computers & Music, a unique cross-disciplinary program combining computer science, musical composition, and performance. This wonderful combination of programming and music remains deeply rooted in his life as Christopher is not only talented in technology but is also a songwriter and guitarist for the band The Providers, who regularly release music through their site. Interestingly, during his studies, he also learned Brazilian Portuguese and spent a semester living in Rio de Janeiro, participating in the Brown in Brazil program.

Career highlights

After graduating from Brown University, O’Donnell began his career in marketing at a small software company, which pivoted him towards product management. There, he built and led a product management and product design team, developing 60+ technology solutions for US government customers, including the Department of Defense. Not bad for the start, right?

Later, he became Director of Product Development at Performable, where he led the design and development of their analytics and engagement tools. Performable was later acquired by HubSpot, marking the beginning of O’Donnell’s long 10-year tenure there.

At HubSpot, O’Donnell served in various roles, eventually becoming the Chief Product Officer. During his decade at HubSpot, he helped the company grow significantly, overseeing the product and design teams and leading HubSpot to a 100x increase in share price. His leadership was recognized as he was named one of the best product leaders by Comparably in 2019. In addition to his role at HubSpot, O’Donnell co-founded Firetower.app, a JavaScript error-tracking application acquired by Twitter and then Google.

In 2021, O’Donnell joined Thrive Global as Chief Product Officer. There, he successfully re-platformed the product and hired over 100 people in a year. Christopher is also known for his passion for mentoring and developing future leaders through programs like the Associate Product Manager (APM) initiative he started at HubSpot, which focuses on preparing individuals for future leadership roles.

The rise of Day.ai

The culmination of Christopher O’Donnell’s extensive career in technology and product management has led to his latest venture, Day.ai. With over a decade of experience at HubSpot, O’Donnell recognized the evolving needs of businesses in the AI age. His time at HubSpot, combined with his roles at Performable and Thrive Global, honed his understanding of product development, customer experience, and the importance of intelligent systems that adapt to user needs.

Teaming up with Michael Pici, another ex-HubSpot VP, they created an innovative solution, Day.ai, which revolutionizes Customer Relationship Management (CRM) by integrating advanced AI capabilities. Day.ai resolves the limitations of traditional CRMs, which often involve manual data entry and complex interfaces that hinder efficiency and user satisfaction. Drawing from his background in creating user-centric products, O’Donnell aimed to develop a solution that combines a Meeting Assistant, CRM, and Knowledge Base into a single, cohesive platform.

“Day.ai builds all of this information behind the scenes, and all you have to do is just ask it a question, and it comes back with the answers,” shares O’Donnell with TechCrunch.

By founding Day.ai, O’Donnell intends to put customers at the center of every business decision, leveraging AI to provide a seamless and intuitive user experience. This innovative approach aims to eliminate the cumbersome aspects of legacy CRM systems, allowing businesses to stay effortlessly connected to their customers’ needs. As the Founder & CEO of Day.ai, O’Donnell continues to push the boundaries of what customer intelligence solutions can achieve, reflecting his commitment to enhancing the intersection of technology and user experience.

Day.ai recently secured $4 million in seed funding led by Sequoia. Although it is currently available only through an invite-only beta version, the team aims to make traditional CRMs obsolete in the future.

“It’s four of us on the team. I pay myself a minimum wage. We are happy as clams. It’s about the fun of starting over.” shares O’Donnell with TechCrunch.

Christopher’s personal life

First and foremost, Christopher O’Donnell is a dedicated family man who deeply values his family. He often emphasizes that being a father and husband is his top priority, and he cherishes the time spent with his wife and two children. His family is the driving force behind his professional and personal endeavors as he strives to balance his career achievements with a fulfilling family life.

“Before anything else, it’s definitely about family for me, you know, being a father and a husband comes before everything else, and everything is really ultimately in service of that. I have 2 little kids and a wonderful wife (I married my high school sweetheart), so you know that’s really what life is about for me.” shares in one of the podcasts, Christopher O’Donnell.

Christopher O’Donnell’s life outside of his professional achievements is deeply intertwined with music. Music has played a significant role in his personal and professional life. He has always been involved in playing instruments, storytelling, and songwriting. The combination of these two passions — music and technology — has shaped his unique approach to leadership. Leadership is yet another part of Christopher’s identity.

As you might have noticed, all the positions Christopher has taken during his career were managerial and leadership positions. So, what is Christopher’s role as a leader? What are his insights on leadership in general after so many years in this role?

What kind of leader is Christopher?

Christopher O’Donnell embodies a unique and adaptive leadership style, recognizing the importance of diverse skill sets within a team. He distinguishes three types of leaders: the seer, the fixer, and the runner. The seer is the visionary, making big decisions and clearing the path for future success. The fixer dives into the toughest problems, whether they’re technological, procedural, or human, and resolves them efficiently. The runner excels in operations, ensuring processes are executed flawlessly.

O’Donnell acknowledges that he is not the type to lead with rigid project management tools but rather empowers those who are exceptional in those areas to lead. He believes in hiring the best people for each role and allowing them to excel. This approach ensures that his teams are well-rounded and highly effective.

He explains, “I’m not the person to stand up a project management team with Gantt charts and check-in meetings. We hire people who are incredibly good at that and let them be the best in the world at that aspect of leadership.”

O’Donnell also emphasizes the importance of giving team members autonomy and space to fail, which fosters rapid career growth and builds a strong, capable team. He shares, “It brings people along in their careers very quickly and gives you a deep bench as a leader.”

His leadership philosophy extends to his superpower, which he describes as both a strength and a liability: managing in a way that makes him want to work for his team members. This approach has earned him admiration and loyalty from his teams, creating a culture where everyone can thrive and contribute their best.

Final thoughts

Christopher’s story is another proof to the idea that true excellence arises from a deep-seated enthusiasm and commitment to one’s field. His journey exemplifies how IT stars are born through a profound love and passion for their craft. Early fascination with technology and music, combined with his relentless pursuit of innovation, has shaped him into a remarkable leader in the tech industry.
